Mansfield stayed unbeaten with a thrilling 63-53 victory over Arlington Martin on Friday night at R.L. Anderson Stadium.
The Tigers (3-0) set a season-high for points against Martin, a Class 6A area finalist last season. Mansfield finally secured the victory with a TD with just under 1 ½ minutes left in the game.
The Tigers held a 28-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the scoring was far from over. A Martin field goal late in the first half cut Mansfield’s lead to 42-23 at halftime. The Warriors tacked on two more scores in the third to reduce the lead to 42-39.
Mansfield, which is averaging 48 points a game this season behind quarterback Braxton Van Cleave and a balanced offense bolstered by running back Teddy Clark and receivers Jacobe Hayes and Zion Robinson, tacked on another touchdown with 11 minutes left for a 10-point lead.
Martin scored 13 seconds later to cut the lead to three, before Mansfield went up 56-46 with just under 7 minutes to play. A little more than 2 minutes later, Martin pulled to within 3 points, but Mansfield answered with another TD for a 63-53 lead with 1:30 left.
The Tigers defense held off the Warriors for the victory. The Warriors have started 0-3 this season, facing stout competition and falling to perennial state powers Austin Lake Travis and Denton Guyer.
Mansfield will host Waco Midway at 7 p.m. Thursday at Vernon Newsom Stadium in the Tigers’ last pre-district game.
