A wrong-way driver led Mansfield police on a two-county chase before hitting another vehicle and committing suicide Monday, according to a Mansfield Police Department statement.

The suspect, who has not been identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner pending notification of next of kin, was spotted driving the wrong way in the 2200 block of FM 917 at approximately 12:26 p.m. Monday, when police were notified.

When Mansfield officers responded and attempted to pull over the suspect, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, the driver initially yielded, but then drove away and displayed a gun.

Mansfield police pursued the suspect, who then fired multiple gunshots at the police, who returned fire but did not strike the suspect, according to the statement.

The vehicle chase entered Johnson County and the City of Burleson, with other agencies called to assist. The suspect drove back into Mansfield, where the suspect rear-ended another vehicle in the westbound landes of the 3400 block of East Broad Street. The collision immobilized the suspect's vehicle.

While still inside the vehicle, the suspect took his life with a self-inflicted gunshot, according to the statement. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Mansfield Fire and Rescue.

No other injuries have been reported.

The Mansfield Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division and Internal Affairs will be investigating the incident. The Texas Rangers have also been notified.
