A Mansfield home was heavily damaged by fire Thursday night.

The blaze began in the garage at the home at 1418 Southern Hills Drive at approximately 8 p.m. and was extinguished by 9 p.m., according to dispatch records.

Homeowner Leroy Cattell, who has lived at the Walnut Creek Country Club golf course house for 20 years, was at home when he heard shouts that his house was on fire. Cattrell said he had just checked the lithium battery charging his golf cart in the garage and plugged in the lithium battery charging his Toyota Rav4.

Cattrell and his dog escaped the home, but his 10-year-old cat, Riley, did not survive. Cattrell's wife was not at home.

The garage and another vehicle parked outside were completely destroyed and the entire home sustained severe damage, Cattrell said. Insurance adjusters were on scene Friday afternoon.

The fire is still under investigation, according to the Mansfield Fire Department.
