Summit scored a pair of second-half touchdowns to top Timberview, 21-20, and stay unbeaten in district play Friday at Vernon Newsom Stadium. ‘
The Jaguars (4-2, 4-0 District 3-5A DII) are tied atop the district standings with Argyle, the No. 5-ranked team in Texas’ Class 5A Division II.
Summit pulled within a score of Timberview (3-4, 2-3 3-5A DII) with a half-minute left in the third quarter when quarterback Demarus Bird threw a 17-yard strike to Domonique Young, who leaped over a defender in the end zone to cut the Wolves’ lead to 20-14.
Almost 7 minutes later, the pair connected again, this time for a 25-yard TD strike, with Young making the grab in the end zone under heavy coverage to give Summit its first lead of the night, 21-20. The TD passes were two of Bird’s nine completions in the game, and only one pass was for a longer gain.
Timberview took the early lead by scoring on its first drive. Chance Collins gave the Wolves great field position by returning the opening kickoff 32 yards to near midfield. Quarterback Anthony DeSanto methodically moved his team downfield, with a mix of runs by Jaylon Woods and passing.
With 3 ½ minutes gone in the first quarter, DeSanto threw a pass to Collins, who outjumped a defender at the 2-yard line and strolled into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
The Wolves padded their lead 15 seconds into the second quarter when Woods, on first down from the 36, bolted through the middle of the line and outraced the defense to the end zone for a 13-0 lead.
Summit’s Adarion Nettles had an answer, though, 2 ½ minutes later when he broke free for a 44-yard scoring run to cut Timberview’s lead to 13-7.
Timberview struck first in the second half by driving 81 yards in eight plays. Running back Cedric Portley, who carried four times on the drive, cut to the outside on third-and-one and went 39 yards to set up the Wolves at the Summit 6-yard line. Woods took it from there, giving Timberview a 20-7 lead with 3:10 left in the third quarter.
Summit answered with Bird’s two scoring passes to Young, and the Jaguars forced a punt on Timberview’s final drive of the game.
