BURLESON – The No. 12-ranked Timberview Wolves beat No. 11-ranked Burleson Centennial 50-47 as Ryan Wright made the game-winning three-pointer with four seconds to play Tuesday at Centennial High School.
Timberview (11-3 in District 8-5A, 27-7 overall) led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter and as many as 12 in the third.
Centennial (11-3, 28-7) didn’t let the game get away and went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit and another 15-2 run to take the lead in the fourth quarter.
Centennial senior forward Jared Cox hit a three to cap a 15-2 run to give Centennial a 43-41 lead early in the fourth quarter – its first lead since Cox made a free throw after Timberview committed a technical foul before the game started.
Cox scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and blocked two shots in the loss Tuesday.
Timberview senior guard Jaden Goudeau made two free throws to tie the game on the next possession and followed that with a bucket to give Timberview a 45-43 lead.
Goudeau led Timberview with 12 points in the win. The senior forward Wright scored the next possession to give Timberview a four-point lead. Wright scored eight points.
Centennial senior guard Tristin Flowers scored to cut Timberview’s lead to 47-45 late in the fourth quarter. Flowers finished with eight points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal.
With Centennial running a trap defense, junior guard Keylan Jones stole the ball from Timberview and dished it to sophomore guard Dontre Grandberry, who scored to tie the game 47-47 in the final minute.
Grandberry scored 11 points with four rebounds and two assists. Jones led Centennial with three assists in the loss.
Trailing by 14 in the second quarter, Centennial went on an 8-0 run – including six points from Cox – to close the first half and cut Timberview’s lead to 28-22 at halftime.
Cox made a free-throw before the opening tip-off to give Centennial an early 1-0 lead after Timberview committed a technical foul before the game started.
Timberview junior guard Jason Washington hit a three to give Timberview a 3-1 lead on its first possession of the game. Timberview held the lead until early in the fourth quarter.
Washington finished with five points for Timberview Tuesday. Timberview junior guard Jonathan Williams and junior forward Jaden Marshall each added eight points in the win. Centennial sophomore Mason Williams added six rebounds, two assists, a steal, a block and four points in the loss.
After Centennial beat Timberview 42-38 Jan. 17 at Timberview in their first matchup of the season, Tuesday’s win gave Timberview second-place in District 8-5A behind its crosstown-rival No. 6-ranked Summit (13-1, 27-7) with Centennial finishing third.
Timberview beat Summit 50-48 Feb. 4 at Summit High School in Summit’s lone district loss of the season.
Timberview and Centennial are each in the Texas 5A Division 1 Playoff bracket with district-champion Summit and the fourth-place Arlington Seguin Cougars (9-5, 20-14) each in the Division 2 bracket. The schools with higher total enrollments are in the Division 1 bracket.
Playoffs are set to begin Tuesday with the Bi-District Championship round.
As the District 8-5A Division 1 winner, Timberview will face the District 7-5A Division 1 runner-up in the Bi-District Championship round.
Centennial will face the District 7-5A Division 1 winner.
The Arlington Heights Yellowjackets (12-0 in District 7-5A, 22-12 overall) are the District 7-5A champions with the Paschal Panthers (10-2, 26-7) finishing second ahead of the South Hills Scorpions (7-5, 9-21) in third and the Polytechnic Parrots (5-7, 11-17) in fourth.
