The Summit boys basketball team made its first trip to the UIL Class 5A Division II state final and returned with the first state championship in the team’s history, defeating Fort Bend Marshall, 54-47, on Saturday in San Antonio.

The Jaguars (33-7) relied on their usual stifling defense against the Buffalos (37-3), ranked No. 2 in the state, smothering Marshall to hold at 25-13 halftime lead in the game at the Alamodome.

Ian Sedah, who hit two key free throws with a half-minute left in the game, was selected as the championship game MVP. He scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds. Teammate Theo Brannan added 12 points and Caleb Richards scored 10 for the winners.

Summit, making only its second state tournament appearance – the other came in 2023 – was ranked No. 6 in the state after capturing first place in District 8-5A DII with a 13-1 record.

In Tuesday’s semifinal, the Jaguars scored a 48-40 victory over Killeen Ellison, which had eliminated Summit from the 2023 state tournament. Earlier in the Class 5A DII playoffs, the Jaguars defeated Colleyville Heritage, Canutillo, Argyle (which they limited to 18 points in the game) and Fort Worth Polytechnic.

Summit’s average margin of victory in the postseason was 17 points, including decisive victories over Canutillo, Argyle and Polytechnic.
