Legacy stumbles against Colleyville Heritage

Legacy wrapped up its non-district schedule with a 55-21 loss to Colleyville Heritage before a homecoming crowd Friday night at Vernon Newsom Stadium. The start of the game was delayed 45 minutes because of lightning in the area

The Broncos (0-3) fell behind 14-0 only 3 minutes into the game. A quick opening drive by the Panthers (2-1) went 65 yards in four plays, punctuated by a 48-yard touchdown pass from Lane Vargas to Trevi Preische. An interception on the next drive gave Colleyville Heritage the ball inside Legacy territory, and Gabriel Bess eventually scored from 1 yard out.

Legacy was just as quick to cut the lead in half. Running back Mason Williams took a handoff straight up the middle and caught the Panthers defense off-guard, racing 73 yards before being brought down from behind at the 2-yard line. He covered the rest of the ground on the next play to cut the Panthers' lead to 14-7 with almost 8 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter.

Colleyville Heritage opened up the lead to 31-7 on a 28-yard field goal by Andrew Roy, a 54-yard TD run by Vargas and his nine-yard scoring pass to Preische.

Legacy answered with its most sustained drive of the night, 14 plays and 75 yards. Williams did most of the heavy lifting, carrying six times for 23 yards before Kobe Nelms scooted in from one yard out to make the score 31-14 with 2:22 left remaining in the first half.

It looked like the Legacy defense would make that score stand until halftime, but Vargas found Shayal Ally for 31 yards and a score with 15 seconds left to give Colleyville Heritage a 38-14 lead at intermission.

After the Panthers scored on their first second-half drive, Legacy mounted another patient drive, again covering 75 yards and capped by Alex Zapien's six-yard TD pass to Ethan Chandler with 4 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. Colleyville Heritage tacked on another touchdown and field goal in the third to wrap up the scoring.

In other games Friday night, Lake Ridge (2-1) topped Lake Highlands, 44-31; Timberview (3-0) rolled over Richardson (1-2), 60-7; and Summit (1-2) beat Midlothian Heritage (0-3), 42-19. On Thursday night, Mansfield (2-1) won its second game in a row when kicker Aaron Price hit a 35-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Tigers to a 31-28 victory over Plano at Newsom Stadium.

Next week, all Mansfield ISD teams open district play. Mansfield meets Red Oak in District 11-6A at 7 p.m. Thursday at Newsom Stadium for senior night; Lake Ridge (11-6A) travels to face Waxahachie at 7 p.m. Friday at Lumpkin Stadium; Legacy (8-5A DI) plays host to Cleburne at 7 p.m. Friday at R.L. Anderson Stadium; Summit (8-5A DI) visits Lancaster at 7 p.m. Friday at Lancaster Stadium; and Timberview (7-5A DII) faces Burleson at 7 p.m. Friday at Newsom Stadium for the Wolves' homecoming.
